I. Position Summary

World Monuments Fund (WMF) is seeking a Senior Director of Field Projects to oversee WMF’s portfolio of field projects. Based at WMF’s global headquarters in New York, the Senior Director of Field Projects will work with international staff to develop, design, implement, and facilitate the evaluation of preservation projects around the world. Reporting to the Vice President of Programs, the Senior Director of Field Projects directly manages six experienced Regional Directors and Managers and supervises the management of approximately 50 preservation projects that range from research and documentation to major physical interventions, and often include expansive stakeholder engagement and capacity-building. The Senior Director provides counsel on project management and decision-making, contributes to fundraising and donor relations through personal interactions and public events, and supports the Vice President of Programs in professional engagement and thought leadership. This is a full-time, exempt position based at WMF’s global headquarters in New York.

II. Responsibilities 

Field Projects Supervision (75%)

  • Oversee a large portion of the WMF portfolio, working closely with project managers to shape individual projects and ensure their timely delivery and reliable reporting to headquarters and donors;
  • Supervise project managers in the development of new projects and associated proposals, budgets, and workplans, ensuring professional rigor, relevance, and alignment with institutional priorities and strategies;
  • Review and approve all project materials, including proposals, budgets, workplans, consultant and partner agreements, and professional and donor reporting;
  • Support project managers in the development of reliable local partnerships and professional relationships, stepping in to resolve challenges as needed;
  • Work closely with the Senior Director of Programs and Programs Coordinator to ensure all internal reporting, financial tracking, and general recordkeeping meet WMF requirements;
  • Integrate monitoring, evaluation, and learning into project development, implementation, and review, in close collaboration with Senior Director of Monitoring and Evaluation;
  • Work collaboratively across Departments to ensure effective fundraising and communication in support of the project portfolio.

Professional Engagement and Public Education (15%)

  • Represent WMF and its work at professional meetings, conferences, and public events, as needed;
  • Identify and develop opportunities for dissemination and publication of project outcomes through a variety of professional and public platforms and venues;
  • Support creation and expansion of professional partnerships.

Administration (10%)

  • Review and approve all project-related contracts and agreements, with support from Programs Coordinator;
  • Support Vice President of Programs in the periodic review of the project portfolio and implementing strategies for optimization;
  • Contribute to project selection processes, including Executive Team review meetings and World Monuments Watch.

III. Qualifications

  • 10+ years of hands-on international heritage experience working on projects in the field;
  • Graduate degree in architecture, historic preservation/cultural resource management, archaeology, urban planning, or related fields;
  • Conservation architect, preferred;
  • Proven professional network and familiarity with multiple distinct cultural contexts;
  • Demonstrated experience in professional communications through public talks and published work;
  • Facility with Microsoft applications and multiple mobile messaging platforms;
  • Preferred: Facility with languages other than English

V. Compensation and Benefits

The World Monuments Fund offers a comprehensive and highly competitive compensation and benefits package, including paid time off, wellness and sick time off, holiday time off, and a multitude of other insurance benefits such as medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and a fully comprehensive retirement plan.

The salary range for this position will be $110,000 – $130,000, depending on experience.
